Daihatsu Hijet vs Subaru Sambar: which should you buy?
On paper these two look like near-twins, and in later years they are. But the older Subaru-built Sambar is a genuinely different truck from the Hijet, and knowing which Sambar you are looking at matters more than the badge.
Daihatsu Hijet
- Construction
- Body-on-frame
- Engine
- 3-cyl, under front seats
- Notable trim
- Jumbo extended cab
- Known for
- Durability & load
Subaru Sambar
- Engine
- 4-cylinder (unique)
- Layout
- Rear-engine, RWD
- Timing
- Non-interference
- Built by
- Subaru (pre-2012)
The detail that decides it: Sambar years
Subaru built the Sambar in-house through 2012. After that, production moved to Daihatsu, and later Sambars are rebadged Hijets. If you buy a later Sambar, you are buying a Hijet with a different badge, so the comparison below only really applies to pre-2012 Subaru-built trucks.
Where the Hijet wins
- Longest wheelbase in the kei truck class, so the largest flatbed for its footprint
- The Jumbo extended cab adds passenger and storage space without giving up bed length
- Body-on-frame construction suits heavy, repeated loads, and Japanese municipalities and fire departments use it for exactly that
- Wider parts support than the Sambar, since far more Hijets were imported
Where the Sambar wins
- The only 4-cylinder in the kei truck class, so it runs noticeably smoother and quieter than any 3-cylinder rival
- Non-interference engine, so a timing belt failure will not destroy the motor the way it can on many designs
- The widest range of specialty body configurations, including tankers and high-roof vans
- Rear-engine layout, which keeps the cabin quieter and gives it a more distinctive character
Our take
If you want the best-supported, hardest-working truck and will lean on it for heavy loads, the Hijet is the safer choice. If refinement and something less common matter more, and you can find a genuine pre-2012 Subaru-built Sambar, it is the more interesting truck to own. Be ready for narrower parts support, so it suits buyers who are comfortable with a specialist importer behind them.
