Subaru Sambar buying guide

The Subaru Sambar stands apart on one spec alone: it is the only kei truck built with a 4-cylinder engine, where every competitor uses a 3-cylinder. That gives it a noticeably smoother, more refined feel than the rest of the class.

Engine and layout

Every other kei truck on this site uses a 3-cylinder engine -- the Sambar is the sole exception, and it shows in how it drives: smoother, quieter, and less coarse at higher revs. It also uses a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with body-on-frame construction, similar in spirit to the Acty. One practical upside worth knowing: the engine is non-interference, meaning a timing belt failure will not destroy the engine the way it would on many interference designs -- a real long-term ownership advantage.

A note on generations

Subaru built the Sambar in-house through 2012. After that, production shifted to Daihatsu, and later Sambars are rebadged Hijets rather than Subaru’s own design. If the 4-cylinder engine and Subaru-specific engineering are why you’re drawn to the Sambar, look specifically for a pre-2012 model -- later ones share their mechanicals with the Hijet instead.
