Honda Acty vs Daihatsu Hijet: which should you buy?
These two sit at genuinely opposite ends of the kei truck spectrum. The Acty is built around refinement, balance, and community support. The Hijet is built to be worked hard and keep working. Which one is right for you depends almost entirely on how the truck will actually spend its days.
Honda Acty
- Layout
- Mid-engine, RWD/4WD
- Notable trim
- Attack (locking diff)
- Known for
- Community & feel
Daihatsu Hijet
- Construction
- Body-on-frame
- Notable trim
- Jumbo extended cab
- Known for
- Durability & load
Where the Acty wins
- Mid/rear-engine layout gives noticeably better weight balance and a quieter, cooler cabin than the Hijet’s front-cab layout
- The “Attack” trim includes a locking rear differential -- a feature the Hijet doesn’t offer -- for serious traction on mud, snow, or loose gravel
- Largest and most active US owner community of any kei truck model, which makes troubleshooting and sourcing parts easier
- Better suited to daily driving and mixed-use ownership, not just heavy work
Where the Hijet wins
- True body-on-frame construction handles heavy, repeated loads better than the Acty’s car-based structure
- Longest wheelbase in the kei truck class, meaning the largest flatbed for its footprint
- The Jumbo extended cab option adds real passenger and storage space without sacrificing bed length
- Trusted enough for Japanese municipal and fire department fleet use -- a strong real-world durability signal
Our take
If the truck’s main job is hauling heavy, repeated loads -- farm work, construction materials, anything body-on-frame toughness genuinely matters for -- the Hijet is the better tool. If you want a more balanced daily driver with strong community backup and don’t need maximum load capacity, the Acty is the more rounded choice, and the Attack trim’s locking differential is a real advantage if traction matters more to you than bed length. This is less about one truck being better than the other, and more about which job you actually need it to do.
